Editor's Note
Athenae (Athenai) was one of the coastal towns of Pontus, with a harbour and a Greek temple. The earliest recorded settlement was a trading colony founded by Greeks from Miletus in the 8th century BC. According to Procopius, the town's name came from an ancient princess of the same name whose tomb lay in the area; Arrian described it as a deserted fort, while Procopius called it a populous place.
