It is said that Kılıçdede Hazretleri fell as a martyr in the Seljuk wars during the Turkification of Anatolia after the Battle of Manzikert and was buried here. Kılıçdede ("Sword Elder") is thought to have taken his name from the use of the sword in the battles of that time. The tomb is known to have existed long before the mosque was built.
