Editor's Note
It was built in 1661 by Fazıl Ahmet Pasha. Students trained at the madrasa were sent to the Bayezid Madrasa in Amasya, and from there appointed to various institutions across the country. Used for various purposes until 1964, the Taş Medrese (Stone Madrasa) has been used as a library ever since. The madrasa consists of 28 small domes and 1 large one. When first built, the domes were covered with lead. However, during the Ottoman–Russian Wars of 1877–78 the lead coverings were stripped off. Why? The lead was to be made into bullets. In later years the domes were re-covered, this time with copper.
