Editor's Note
It is unclear when Jews first arrived in Ottoman Tekirdağ, but the oldest documented gravestone dates to 1562. In 1820, following a fire, the Jews of the city were granted permission to rebuild their synagogue, indicating that the community was already well established by that time. Between 1881/82 and 1893 the city was home to 1,656 Jews, and 2,654 in 1906/07. Emigration from the city, particularly to Seattle, began in the early twentieth century. In 1914 only 1,566 Jews lived in the city, and in 1927 just 1,481 of a total population of 130,000 were Jewish.
