Editor's Note
The Çukur Fountain, which also gave its name to the neighborhood where it stands, was built as a "neighborhood square fountain." Its front facade is made of cut kefeki stone, and its water comes from the cistern behind it. Its side walls are built of brick and its ceiling is wooden. Today the fountain's side walls have been whitewashed. The fountain's most distinctive ornament is the section made with a brick lattice system at the point where the walls meet the roof. This style of architectural decoration is found to share the same character as the "Hatice Sultan Fountain," built in 1711 in Ayvansaray, Istanbul.
