The mosque, also known as the Defterdar Abdüsselam Mosque, is thought to have been built by Defterdar Abdüsselam, one of the chief treasurers of Sultan Selim I, during his term as treasurer between 1512 and 1520. It is the oldest known mosque in Havsa. There was once a fountain beside the mosque as well; though the fountain has not survived, its inscription remains. It was damaged in the earthquake of 1752. It suffered destruction during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877, and in 1891 it was repaired by Hacı Süleyman Efendi and reopened for worship.
