Editor's Note
Throughout history, Kefken Island has been one of the most important points of maritime trade in the Black Sea. As it lay on the trade routes connecting the inner Black Sea to Istanbul, its importance grew as the number of ships increased. In particular, the fact that boats and ships could take shelter here in stormy weather and obtain provisions, water, and supplies from the shore turned it into a natural harbor. The earliest known history of Kefken Island dates to the Bithynian period, when, although there was no settlement on the mainland opposite, the island served as a port for transshipment and shelter. The island of Tynia is also referred to as the island of Bithynia.
