Editor's Note
It was founded on the slope of Boztepe, in a position overlooking the city. Built on two terraces, the monastery complex is surrounded by a high protective wall. The monastery was founded in the time of Alexios III (1349–1390), repaired several times, and took its final form in the 19th century. Originally it consisted of a rock church to the south containing holy water, the chapel at its entrance, and a few cells. Inside the rock church are inscriptions and portraits of Alexios III's wife Theodora and his mother Eirene.
