Editor's Note
The Molla Siyah Mosque was originally built in the 11th century, during the Byzantine period, as a church dedicated to Saint Andrew. Converted into a mosque about a century after the conquest, the building underwent several interventions over time in both function and architecture, acquiring the layered architectural identity that survives today. Built on a three-aisled basilical plan, the structure sits on a rectangular area running east–west. The masonry technique, combining cut stone and rough-hewn stone, gives a distinctive appearance both to the wall bonding and to the overall coherence of the mass.
