Editor's Note
The Gülbahar Hatun School, or İmaret School, was first built in 1514 together with the Gülbahar Hatun Complex. According to Ottoman-period records, the school, located to the southwest of the complex, was a single-unit building with a masonry dome. This first structure reflected the characteristic features of the plain-plan, stone-built domed schools commonly found in Ottoman complexes. Falling into ruin over time, this first school was replaced by a new building constructed in 1887 as part of the modernization and schooling policies pursued during the reign of Abdülhamid II (1876–1909).
