Hortokop Castle is located in the Ortaköy area of the Maçka district of Trabzon. Higher on its south side and gently sloping on the north, the castle is today largely in ruins. Its walls, built of rubble stone with horasan mortar, are 5 to 8 meters high and 1.5 meters thick. Reinforced with U-shaped projecting bastions, the castle sits at an elevation of 675 meters above sea level at a point commanding the Değirmendere Valley. It is thought to have been built in the Roman period to protect the road to Satala that passed over the Zigana Pass.
