Editor's Note
The Ziyaiye Medrese stood in the district once known as Kürtler and now as the Muammerbey Quarter in Kayseri. Elderly people who remember the medrese's vaults and arches are still alive, but today no remains are visible on its site. According to eyewitnesses it was an imposing structure. It is thought to have possibly been commissioned in 1218, during the reign of İzzeddin Keykavus I, by Ziyaeddin Kara Arslan, who was then the Emir-i Devat (keeper of the inkwell) and who, while the Sultan was in Kayseri, was sent as an envoy to the Armenians in Sis and brought their gifts back to Kayseri.
