The Gön Han (also known as the Piri Paşa Han) is located right beside the Covered Bazaar. This historic han was built in 1519, during the reign of Sultan Selim I (Yavuz Sultan Selim), by the Ottoman grand vizier Piri Mehmet Paşa. For many years the Gön Han provided lodging for the caravans traveling along the historic Silk Road. Because leather processing was generally carried out inside the han, it was given the name "Gön Han," gön meaning tanned leather. In Hugo Grothe's 1906 photograph, the Gön Han is seen still standing soundly and two stories high.
