It is known that the mosque was built by Hatıroğlu Eşref Bey, one of the Mongol emirs. There are two differing views as to whether it was built in 1222 or 1271. Although popularly known as the "Katıroğlu Mosque," and although some sources also refer to it by names such as "Toprak Minare" and "Osman Paşa" mosque, these names are no longer used today. Its minaret collapsed in the earthquake of 1835 and was rebuilt during repairs to the mosque in 1867.
