The Church of the Forty Child Martyrs in the Bahçebaşı neighborhood, one of the important places of pilgrimage for Armenians, stood just to the southeast of the Surp Haç Catholic Church, according to a photograph in the Grand National Assembly's Kayseri Photo Album from around 1925. The name Forty Martyrs most likely derives from an event well known in Christian tradition. The Forty Martyrs of Sebaste (present-day Sivas), or the Holy Forty, were a group of soldiers serving in the Roman army's Legio XII Fulminata (the Twelfth Thundering Legion) who were put to death in AD 320.
