Editor's Note
In the mid-19th century, the Ottoman state began establishing gunpowder and saltpeter production facilities in various provinces in order to spread its military industry beyond the capital. As a result of these efforts, in 1842 the Hüseyin Bey Imaret adjoining the north side of the Hacı Kılıç Mosque in Kayseri was demolished, and the Kayseri Saltpeter Factory was built in its place. Construction took about twenty years, and in 1864 the factory officially gained the status of "Imperial Saltpeter Factory." In 1872 it was modernized with machinery brought from England, ushering in a more modern production process.
