Editor's Note
Location: It stands in the village of Balıkçılar, formerly known as Hamalyoz, in the central district of Rize. History: A three-line Ottoman Turkish inscription to the west of the entrance of the Balıkçılar Village Mosque, also known as the Hamalyoz Mosque, reveals that it was built in 1317 AH (1899) through the efforts of Hacı Hatib Zade Hacı Osman Efendi and the villagers, while a Turkish inscription indicates it was restored in 1990. Besides its inscription, two endowment records for the building have been identified. The first, dated 1763, shows that the building was erected by the villagers and that an imam and preacher were appointed that same year.
