Ishkhani Monastery was built in the 7th century during the early Christian period in Tao-Klarjeti. It is held to have been founded around 639 AD by King Adarnase III of Iberia (Kartli), and was later expanded and rebuilt in the 10th century by Bagrat III, the first king of united Georgia.
