Editor's Note
Location: It stands in the Kurtuluş Neighborhood of Güneyce village, formerly called Varda, in the İkizdere district of Rize. History: According to the three-line Ottoman inscription above the prayer hall's entrance door, later disrupted during expansion works, it was built in 1886 by Bilal Usta. The inscription reads: 'To behold the glory of His countenance is the purpose of this mosque; the path toward God is the purpose of withdrawing from worldly attachment; maker Bilal Usta, year H. 1304/1886.' Publications on the building emphasize that it was commissioned in 1304 by Hacı (Şeyh) Osman Niyazi Sipahioğlu and built by the masters Ali and Hasan of Pazar.
