Ferhat is a brave young man. A painter, he decorates palaces. Şirin is the sister of the Sultan of Amasya. For the sake of their love for one another, he carries out a wish beyond human strength, succeeding in bringing water to the city by boring through the mountains. Yet the Sultan of Amasya still refuses to give his sister to Ferhat. Ferhat never reaches his beloved Şirin, nor Şirin her Ferhat. (From the monument's information panel)
