Merzifon and its surroundings were among the areas of most intense Protestant (Evangelical) missionary activity, and the first church there was founded in 1853; in time, as it proved inadequate, it was decided to erect a new building. The new building, whose foundation was laid in 1913 and later completed, saw almost no worship at all because of the deportations. It afterward served for many years as a cinema under the name Doğan Cinema.
