Editor's Note
Located on Alaca Mescit Street in the Veliahmet neighborhood, this mosque was commissioned in 1598 by El Hac Mustafa bin Mehmet el Gumuszade, the Kadi (judge) of Izmit, on the ruins of the Byzantine-era Justinian Palace. Built on a rectangular plan, it has masonry walls. Its two side facades and rear facade have wooden eaves, as a porch for latecomers was added later. The interior walls of the mosque retain the character of the period in which it was built. Its minaret, notable for its height relative to the small mosque, is also of masonry. The area beneath the balcony is corbelled to match the mosque's eaves.
