Editor's Note
Located north of İzmit's center within the boundaries of the Üçtepeler, Arızlı, and Kaba villages on the old Istanbul road, the aqueduct was built as a two-story structure about 50 m long and 15 m high, and its foundations bear traces of the Roman period. Ancient sources state that the aqueduct was commissioned in the 2nd century AD, during the reign of Emperor Trajan, by Pliny, the governor of Nicomedia. Continually repaired in the periods after its construction, the aqueduct bears traces of the Byzantine and Ottoman eras in its upper sections.
