Editor's Note
This is the cemetery believed to hold the graves of somewhere between roughly 40 and 70 Companions of the Prophet and their followers (Sahaba and Tabiun): the Islamic army that came to Istanbul to conquer it during the reign of the Umayyad Caliph Mu'awiya is said to have encamped at this spot, where, by one account, they died of plague, and by another, those killed in battle were buried. (SOURCE: Mercan-Akçat Primary School Tourism Club Magazine, 2011) Located about 1 km from the village center, the cemetery's site is now barren, and apart from a few pieces of stonework belonging to the graves, no visible trace remains.
