Editor's Note
He was a 14th-century commander of the Karasi Beylik, the forefather of Turkish seafaring and the Ottoman state's first admiral, who gave the district its name after conquering Karamürsel. He is regarded as the founder of the Ottoman navy, having established a shipyard at the Kavak Boyu Armutçuk Harbor southwest of Karamürsel, the fief granted to him, and begun building ships there. The birthplace and birth year of Kara Mürsel Alp, who rendered great service in taking the region from the Byzantines, are unknown. His real name was Mürsel. The epithet "Kara" (Black) was given to him by Orhan Gazi for the heroism he displayed.
