Editor's Note
It was built in the 17th century by Mahpeyker Kösem Sultan, wife of the Ottoman sultan Ahmed I and mother of Murad IV and Ibrahim. Standing on the caravan route of its day, the Valide Bridge is built of cut stone in the classical Turkish architectural style, with three pointed-arched openings; it is 64 m long and 4.5 m wide. Triangular cutwaters stand in front of the bridge piers, while those on the downstream side are shaped like triangular prisms. It was restored by the Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality in 1996.
