The ornamented Ottoman gravestones that survive today in the Adapazarı-Erenler Cemetery, in the Erenler district of Sakarya Province, date to the early 19th century. In both form and content, they are accomplished historical artifacts. Yet, owing to ignorance-driven neglect and even vandalism in Turkey and other Islamic countries, these works are today largely unprotected and uncared for. The Erenler Cemetery is located on the southern side of Adapazarı.
