Editor's Note
Between 1581 and 1585, a mill was built on what is today the Çark Water to serve the needs of the Ada hamlet. After serving for nearly 250 years, this mill was replaced in 1734 when the benefactor Devoğlu Mustafa built a 'paddle wheel'/'çark', however primitive, and opened ditches and channels to carry the Çark water as drinking water to the Orta Mosque fountain and to Adapazarı. When this wheel proved insufficient in 1894, it was rebuilt in the modern architecture of the day by the then District Governor of Adapazarı, Mehmet Nüzhet Bey, and remained in service until 1955, when it finally lost its function.
