Editor's Note
The mill, located on the bank of a stream bed to the east of the Akmese settlement, is deteriorating because it has not been used for many years. Its surroundings have also filled with the silt carried by the stream bed, and it is being damaged by illegal excavations as well. Even so, it has survived to the present standing up to its roof. This gable-roofed, brick-built masonry structure was the first modern mill in Izmit and its surroundings to make use of a water turbine. Because of its location, it operated continuously for many years with wheat brought from Izmit, Istanbul and Adapazari, but it lost its function once modern flour mills were established.
