Built according to international architectural principles, this building was put out to tender in 1936. In that same year's issue of the journal Arkitekt, under the heading "Sümerbank Project Competition," it appears that many prominent Turkish and some foreign architects took part, and that the first-place design was Seyfi Arkan's; the building, however, was ultimately designed by Martin Elsaesser, whose name was not among the competition entrants.
