Editor's Note
There was a cemetery on the eastern side of the Surp Asdvadzadzin Monastery. Hans Dernschwam, who visited the place in the 16th century, reported that although the cemetery had once been well kept, it was by then in ruins, noting that he saw "marble columns and stones brought from old palaces and other great buildings. These had been set up over the graves. On them were many inscriptions and epitaphs." The traveller John M. Kinneir, who came here in 1813, likewise reported seeing columns and inscribed marble pedestals. Besides Greeks and Armenians, the cemetery also held graves belonging to Europeans.
