Designed by Paolo Vietti Violi, it opened in 1936. Horse races were held until 1979 at the hippodrome, which comprised racing, training, and ceremonial tracks, a covered grandstand, the state grandstand and box from which Atatürk delivered his Tenth Anniversary Speech, administrative buildings, pergolas, tree-lined grounds, and Normandy farmhouse-style stables for 30 horses. Parade ceremonies on Victory Day and Republic Day continued for some time afterward. For the centenary of Atatürk's birth, the Atatürk Cultural Center was built in the middle of the tracks. The hippodrome was demolished in its entirety in 2019.
