Editor's Note
The Bahçelievler residential development was designed between 1935 and 1938 by Hermann Jansen, winner of the international competition held to plan Ankara's growth. Built by the Bahçelievler Cooperative, the development was constructed on land to the west of Ankara, outside the limits of the period's zoning plan. Although Jansen's initial plan featured a balanced mix of detached, semi-detached, and row houses, the project as actually carried out—adapted by local architects in line with cooperative members' wishes—realized most of the houses as single detached homes set within gardens.
