Editor's Note
Perinthus, also known as Heraclea, was an ancient Roman city in what is now Marmara Ereğlisi. Thought to have been founded around 600 BC by colonists from Samos, it was a flourishing town of ancient Thrace, set on a small peninsula on the Propontis and built like an amphitheatre on the slope of a hill. It served as the capital of the Roman province of Thrace, but declined after being renamed Heraclea in the Byzantine period.
