The castle stands about 4 km outside Gökçetepe village, on the shore of the Gulf of Saros, on a promontory jutting out toward the sea. From the limited data available, particularly the glazed ceramics, Gökçetepe Castle is a Byzantine structure. It is understood to have existed in the 12th century and to have endured until the 14th century. With the surface data currently available, it is not possible to draw conclusions about the periods before or after this date range.
