Editor's Note
Hamidiye Gureba Hospital is one of the Hamidiye hospitals founded during the reign of Abdulhamid II, as part of the health-sector reflections of the change and transformation the Ottoman State entered upon proclaiming the Tanzimat-i Hayriyye on 3 November 1839. With the Tanzimat, the spirit of modernization was no longer confined to the military but aimed to spread across all areas of society, including health. In this period, modernization efforts in the health field across Ottoman lands gathered pace, building on a process that had begun under Selim III and continued under Abdulhamid II.
