Editor's Note
Lala Şahin Paşa (1330–1388) was a commander of Orhan Gazi and Murad I. During the reign of Murad I he served as Beylerbeyi of Rumelia and as vizier, and he was also the first person in Ottoman history to receive the title 'Paşa'. Lala Şahin Paşa, who left charitable works in many places, had this medrese built in the 1340s with the spoils of war. (Source: 16th-Century Bursa Medreses – Mefail Hızlı, pp. 31–32) One of the earliest Ottoman medreses, the building stands within a garden and follows the Seljuk medrese plan, consisting of an entrance, an iwan, and rooms. In the interior there are column capitals from the Byzantine period and two marble columns.
