Editor's Note
The mosque, standing at the crossroads where İnönü Avenue meets Yeni Cumhuriyet Avenue, was built in the first half of the 15th century by a man named Hacı Ali, son of Yiğit. In the court records of 1463, the names 'İbn-i Yiğit Köhne' (meaning 'Old Yiğitoğlu'), 'İbn-i Şab Köhne', or 'İbn-i Şab' were used. Here 'Şab' means 'young man' (yiğit). The mosque, which was left in a hollow when the road was raised, is notable for the seventeen blind mihrab niches on its gable wall. Its main prayer hall, with interior dimensions of 8.40 by 8.30 metres, is covered by a large dome.
