Editor's Note
The Tahtakale Market, one of Bursa's oldest markets, with a history reaching back to the reign of Mehmed I (Çelebi Mehmet), gave its name to the neighborhood it stands in and is where the old Villagers' Bazaar was also held; it holds great importance for Bursa's historical and cultural identity. The name Tahtakale, derived from "Taht-el-kale," means "Below the Castle." In the Byzantine period before the Ottomans, the area, known as Taht-el Kale, was used as a place where horses were tethered and as an infirmary for horses. With the Ottoman period, as the city began to spread beyond the castle walls, a neighborhood and market formed in this area.
