Editor's Note
The Church of the Holy Mother Mary was built for the Armenian community living in the neighborhood. According to the Temettuat (income survey) registers of 1844, only non-Muslims resided in this neighborhood at that time. A large portion of the residents were engaged in silk production. The silk factory owned by Nişan Taktakyan gave its name to the street it stood on, which came to be known as İpekçilik (Silk-Making) Street. An Armenian school once stood in the church's courtyard, and the priest's house on its southeast side still stands today.
