Kara Ahmed Pasha, who set out on 25 August, reached Erzurum on 8 September. The beylerbeys of Erzurum, Dulkadir, Karaman and Sivas, together with their troops, had also been placed under his command. With a force that grew to 40,000 men, on 10 September he marched on Tortum, the central and strongest fortress of the Samtskhe Atabegate, where Kaikhosro also resided. On 13 September the castle was taken and a garrison installed. During this siege, Baltacı Mehmet Pasha, the beylerbey of Dulkadir, also managed to capture the nearby Nihah castle. (Georgia Campaign of 1549, Wikipedia.) A settlement has since been built on the site. Note: the location is approximate.
