There is no inscription providing information about the construction date or builder of the castle, which stands on a hill known as Hacı Kayası that dominates the town and lies to its north. Academic publications report that the castle's original founding dates back to before the Roman era and that most of the walls were rebuilt in the time of the Mengücek dynasty. In particular, it is noted that the Mengücek ruler Fahrettin Behramşah had important additions made to the castle in 1184. The castle's present entrance and walls date to the Seljuk and Ottoman periods.
