Editor's Note
Endowment records establish that this building, one of the largest timber-roofed mosques in Ottoman-era Turkish architecture, was commissioned by Ilyas Bey, son of Bahsayis, who is known to be the same person as Miralem Ilyas Bey holding crown estates at Terkos (Tergoviste) in Serbia. According to its inscription, which no longer survives but was once read, it was built in 891 (1486). Another inscription was recorded, said to have been taken from the founder's tomb, giving 860 (1456) as the death date of Ilyas b. Bahsayis.
