Editor's Note
The Walls of İznik date from the Roman period and stand close to Lake İznik. Their construction is said to have begun in 310, and by 330 the fortifications were protecting the city against enemy attacks. The walls were substantially repaired during the Byzantine period; their circuit, originally about 3,000 meters, reached roughly 4,500 meters after repairs, with wall heights of around 10 to 13 meters.
