The Mahkemeağcin Underground City is an ancient settlement located around the Mahkemeağcin neighborhood, roughly 18 km from Kızılcahamam, Ankara. Within a 3 km radius of the village center there are numerous cultural-heritage sites such as caves, settlements, and churches. The region's first inhabitants are thought to have been early Christians fleeing Roman persecution. The damp, soft tuff made it easy to turn the caves into dwellings and churches. The rock churches contain niches with cross motifs.
