Editor's Note
Hasan Cavus was the child of a family that emigrated from Bulgaria in the early 1900s. Fleeing Bulgarian persecution in those years, Hasan Cavus came to Izmir and, like every young Turk, rushed to the front as a soldier during World War I. His title "Cavus" (Sergeant) came from this military service. Having also fought in the Battle of Gallipoli, he was given the title of war veteran and awarded a "veteran's medal" by the then Minister of War, Enver Pasha. Hasan Cavus joined his life with Fatma Hanim, whom he had met in those years, settled in Bandirma, and took up the trade of making halva.
