The castle served as a base established to protect the routes from the harbor cities on the shores of Biga (Granicus) toward inner Troad, Mysia (Balikesir), Antandros (Altinoluk), Adremition (Edremit), and southern Troad. Although surface surveys turned up pottery fragments dating to the 12th-13th centuries, its strategic position in that period and the fact that it was enclosed by a double line of walls suggest it may date as far back as the 6th century BCE. It was probably repaired extensively in the Byzantine period and remained in use.
