Editor's Note
Set on an exceptional hilltop commanding the Dardanelles, this open-air prayer ground (namazgah) was built, according to its inscription, in Muharram 810 (June 1407) by a benefactor named Iskender, son of Haci Bese, for the use of unmarried soldiers (azebs). One of the few namazgahs to survive with nearly all its sections intact, it is also a highly valuable example of its kind for its setting, proportions, and the beauty of its craftsmanship.
