Editor's Note
The Gelibolu Mevlevihane is one of the fifteen principal Mevlevi lodges (asitane) where dervishes underwent their forty-day retreats and received their training. Founded in the 17th century (probably before 1621), it had the largest grounds and the most magnificent ritual hall (semahane) of these fifteen lodges. What survives of the buildings today is the semahane-tomb and the crown gate, located near the seashore within the Hamzaköy military zone. The lodge's founder and first head was Ağazade Mehmet Hakiki Dede, son of Kara Hasan Ağa, one of the Janissary commanders. The lodge came to be known after him as the Ağazade Dervish Lodge.
