Editor's Note
The city's only synagogue, in Büyük Hamam Street (also known as Eski Havra, 'Old Synagogue,' Street), was first built as a mansion and later converted into a synagogue. The building was used for military purposes during the Second World War and was returned to the community in September 1945. Restored in April 1964, the synagogue was used for eleven years; then, as the Jewish population of the city dwindled greatly, no regular worship could be held there for thirty years.
